I know I'm me - why do I need an ID card?

NO means NO

When does NO mean MAYBE? When it's not the answer the EU wants. With the courageous French NON resounding in their ears, shabby, undemocratic self-interested leaders of Europe propose ignoring the part of their precious constitution that requires ratification by all members and continuing without one of the biggest founder members to prevent derailing the gravy train.

As in Ireland, they refuse to accept any NO votes, ignoring the will of the people, and re-stage votes until they can engineer the 'correct' answer. Sadly, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw dances to their tune like a puppet on a string. With tactics such as these, how can anyone really believe the EU has our interests at heart. Britain has traditionally been one of the biggest net contributors to the EU because we do not get as much money back from Brussels in farm and regional subsidies as our rivals.

According to Treasury figures, between 1995-2002, Britain's average contribution taking the rebate into account, was £2.6billion, or £43.55 per head of population.

The French - the biggest recipient of farm subsidies - contributed £1billion a year or £16.08 per head of their population.

Ill wind that blows no good

Why the surprise that rooftop wind turbines are a waste of money? The blind rush for renewable sources of energy has proved that certain schemes are better than others. And some, like wind turbines, are hopeless.

They're not just expensive, ugly and noisy, but ridiculously inefficient. We're told that #China will soon be sending us cheaper roof turbines. Presumably this is the same China which is running its mushrooming manufacturing industry on power generated by the new coal-fired power stations it is opening at the rate of one a week.

Churning out eco-friendly products in this way is bonkers - and I guarantee they won't work any better tan the ones we're being flogged at the moment. If rooftop turbines are 'architectural acne' (as David Cameron's neighbours put it), the full-scale windfarms now burgeoning across Britain's dwindling countryside are massive acts of environmental vandalism.

It's time we listened to the great thinkers on environmentalism Professor David Bellamy and James Lovelock, who say windfarms are a waste of precious resources which, thanks to subsidies and premiums, benefit only the people who build them.

They distract us from the real needs of the planet which are to control world population, stop the rape of the rain forests and - most importantly - educate ourselves out of the appallingly wasteful existence most of us lead.

Nuclear is the answer

Unless efforts to reduce global carbon dioxide emissions are coordinated on a worldwide basis, any financial pain inflicted on the British public will be futile. If our suddenly green main parties care to look for meaningful solutions, rather than rejoicing in a promising new opportunity for raising more taxes, they should first take a look at France.

With a similar population and comparable GDP, France generates only 6.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide per capita per year, compared with 9.0 tonnes in the UK

WHY? Largely by generating 75% of its electricity from nuclear power and by making the cost of diesel 17% cheaper than petrol - resulting in more than 60% of the cars on the road being fuel-efficient diesels.

The greatest threat to our quality of life is the hot air generated in Parliament, coupled with the smokescreen which is masking any meaningful debate on the subject.
