Democracy in the United Kingdom from our current Elected Dictatorship

You will
notice that, since New Labour came to power, not a single
leading Cabinet member or party 'heavy hitter' has appeared
on the programme (BBC's Question Time). Spin, not face-to-face
confrontations with the voters, is the Government's chosen
method of communication. Ordinary
people are dangerous. Ordinary people might ask a question
which throws a politician 'off message'; the Cabinet member
might reveal himself or herself to be a human being like
us, and not a programmed android. Worse still, he or she
might tell the truth.

The truth
they dare not admit
Comment
- Daily Mail - June 11, 2004
One
shattering moment of candour lays bare the Government's dishonesty
over asylum and immigration. In sworn evidence at a trial of alleged
people-traffickers, a top investigator from the National Criminal
Intelligence Service reveals that immigration could be six times
higher than official statistics suggest.
Robert
Owen's testimony exposes a system hopelessly out of control, even
though he can't tell us all he knows, as most of his information
is 'highly classified'. Quite why material of such hute public
interest should be kept secret can only be wondered at. Is it
because the details are politically embarrassing?
Whatever,
the things he can reveal are chilling enough. At one stage,
he says, 1,000 people a day were claiming asylum at Heathrow though
there are an 'unbelievable' number of illegal routes into Britain
too. As part of a huge criminal racket, lorry drivers are paid
up to £3,000 to sneak people in, while violent Chinese gangsters
bribe boat-owners all over Europe to become smugglers.
No
wonder our immigration system is imploding under the pressure.
Because it can't cope most migrants are simply granted a temporary
residence permit, only to disappear without trace. Even the expert
Mr Owen can't 'guesstimate' the number of foreign nationals living
here illegally. Tens, or hundreds of thousands? He just doesn't
know. And neither, it seems, does anyone else in our ruling establishment.
In
a damning declaration Mr Owen says 'it was accepted (by the Government)
that the true figure of immigration wa considerably higher than
the official figure'. In other words, Whitehall's statistics are
worthless - a truth politicians dare not admit.
This
isn't a question of whether or not immigration is a good thing
(though this paper has consistently argued that properly managed
migration could be of considerable benefit). No. this is about
a Government that has lost control of our borders and is desperately
trying to patch up the NHS and education - not to mention concreting
over much of Southern England to provide more housing - without
the faintest idea who is living here or how many will need such
services.
One
thing is sure: our rulers will go on trying to deceive us with
half-truths and platitudes on this vital issue. Mr Owen's evidence
has revealed some bleak truths about this cynicism. Is it any
wonder politicians are distrusted and despised?
