Ordinary people might ask a question which throws a politician 'off message'; the Cabinet member might reveal himself or herself to be a human being like us, and not a programmed android. I know I'm me - why do I need an ID card?

NO means NO

When does NO mean MAYBE? When it's not the answer the EU wants. With the courageous French NON resounding in their ears, shabby, undemocratic self-interested leaders of Europe propose ignoring the part of their precious constitution that requires ratification by all members and continuing without one of the biggest founder members to prevent derailing the gravy train.

As in Ireland, they refuse to accept any NO votes, ignoring the will of the people, and re-stage votes until they can engineer the 'correct' answer. Sadly, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw dances to their tune like a puppet on a string. With tactics such as these, how can anyone really believe the EU has our interests at heart. Britain has traditionally been one of the biggest net contributors to the EU because we do not get as much money back from Brussels in farm and regional subsidies as our rivals.

According to Treasury figures, between 1995-2002, Britain's average contribution taking the rebate into account, was £2.6billion, or £43.55 per head of population.

The French - the biggest recipient of farm subsidies - contributed £1billion a year or £16.08 per head of their population.

A huge majority of voters wants strict limits on immigration, according to an opinion poll. Two out of three believe the influx of new arrivals, mainly from Eastern Europe, is undermining British culture.

In an alarming result for ministers, three out of four people called for immigration quotas. The same number wanted Labour's open-door policy on migrants from the EU to be replaced with restrictions on the jobs they can take.

Only 4% of the public think Labour has a grip on immigration and nearly half said they were less likely to vote Labour as a result. The YouGov poll also shows that the public no longer believes Government claims that immigration has boosted the economy.

Eight out of ten said they believe migrants took jobs from British workers. Ministers initially said 15,000 people would come to Britain from the East European countries which joined the EU in 2004. Last month they were forced to admit the true figure is many times that level, with more than 600,000 granted work permits.

Home Secretary John Reid is locked in a battle with the Foreign Office over whether Britain maintains its open-door policy when Romania and Bulgaria join the EU next year. Senior Government sources have claimed ministers are planning a permit system that will require Bulgarians and Romanians to prove they have skills in areas where there is a labour shortage.

The publication of the poll, commissioned by the ITV1 programme Tonight With Trevor McDonald, came as former schools inspector Chris Woodhead issued a stark warning that education standards have dropped as a result of the arrival of immigrant children. He said the situation would become 'very, very serious' if large numbers of Bulgarians and Romanians were allowed in without the Government providing significant extra resources. He predicted plummeting morale among teachers and a backlash from parents of English children.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: "Polls like this show why it is so vital to control immigration, so that it can be a benefit to everyone. Sadly, Labour have utterly failed to control immigration."

The Home Office said: "Nationals from the accession countries continue to contribute to the success of the UK economy, while making relatively few demands on the welfare system or the public services. Of those registered to work, 97% are in full-time work and paying tax."
