Britain has traditionally been one of the biggest net contributors to the EU because we do not get as much money back from Brussels in farm and regional subsidies as our rivals. According to Treasury figures, between 1995-2002, Britain's average contribution taking the rebate into account, was £2.6billion, or £43.55 per head of population. The French - the biggest recipient of farm subsidies - contributed £1billion a year or £16.08 per head of their population.

Half city's babies born to migrants

Half of London's babies are the children of foreign-born mothers, an immigration think-tank said yesterday. According to Migrationwatch UK, the rate of births to mothers who are originally from abroad is also approaching 50% in other towns and cities. It's report warned that the rising number of families from outside Britain is causing communities to become segregated.

"The very high concentration of such births in some of our major cities results in some areas where children born with two UK parents are now in a minority," it concluded. "This means there will increasingly be no core culture with which to integrate."

The report examined Government statistics to find out the proportion of foreign-born mothers in areas with high minority populations. It found that, although 49% of babies in Greater London are born to foreign mothers, in some boroughs the proposition is more than two thirds. In East London Borough of Newham, where the majority are from ethnic minorities, 71% of new mothers were born abroad. It was followed by Tower Hamlets (69%) and Brent (68%), the two other boroughs made up mostly of those from ethnic minorities.

Outside London, Slough had second highest rate of births to foreign-born mothers, at 48%, followed by Luton, which had 44%. Leicester and Birmingham, fourth and sixth respectively on the list, have been tipped to become the first cities in the country with a non-white majority.

The report found one in five of all babies born in England and Wales has a mother originally from abroad. In 2004, 124,000 children were born to foreign-born mothers. A decade earlier, the figure was 80,000. Migrationwatch said the increase in births to foreign-born mothers was connected to the sevenfold increase in immigration since the mid-`1990's.

It called for new limits to immigration, especially 'chain migration', under which men and women from abroad come to Britain to marry spouses already in this country. Migrationwatch also called for tight controls on arranged marriages, including a ban on intercontinental immigration by spouses under the age of 24.

Its chairman, Sir Andrew Green, said: "Some realism is long overdue on the effect of massive levels of immigration on the prospects for integrating our communities. It's absurd to imagine we can integrate one third of a million people a year."
