Britain has traditionally been one of the biggest net contributors to the EU because we do not get as much money back from Brussels in farm and regional subsidies as our rivals. According to Treasury figures, between 1995-2002, Britain's average contribution taking the rebate into account, was £2.6billion, or £43.55 per head of population. The French - the biggest recipient of farm subsidies - contributed £1billion a year or £16.08 per head of their population.

If you think last week was bad, just you wait. It may seem to you that our criminal justice system - with its rewards for hijackers and its longing to release killers and rapists to live among us - is now run by enemies of the British people, and you would be broadly right. But soon it will be run by foreigners as well.

Our anti-British elite love the European Convention on Human Rights because it gives them the excuse to do what they want to do anyway but cannot get past voters - encourage mass immigration, abandon the effective punishment of criminals, penalise conservative moral attitudes and outlaw common sense.

Any proper pro-British government could overturn this in an afternoon, withdrawing from the misguided agreement that binds us to these rules. We were a free, law-governed people before we had anything to do with it, and could easily be again. The hard restrictions on power contained in our own Magna Carta, the Habeas Corpus Act and the Bill of Rights are a far better basis for liberty than the vague idealist rubbish in the ECHR.

But there is now a far more dangerous threat to our freedom to govern ourselves. It comes from the European Union, which is reaching out again for total control of our lives. The EU is preparing to abolish one of the last pieces of British national independence - our right to run our own criminal justice system. And the Government is preparing to let it. Mr Blair will undoubtedly give in. Rather than saying 'NO' immediately, officials have already said they 'cannot rule it out' and are 'asking for details', normal preliminaries to a surrender.

The proposal will come up in the autumn when Finland takes over the EU Presidency. Its Premier, Matti Vanhanen, is already gathering support for his plan to allow, say French gendarmes to pursue suspects in Britain, or a 'European Evidence Warrant' that would allow a foreign judge to order British police to search a British citizen's home.

These changes will, as usual, be justified by the supposed wars against terror and organised crime. But they are only the beginning., Our whole criminal justice system, the fruit of a thousand years of freedom and experience, has been designed to stop governments getting too powerful.

The arrangement everywhere else in the EU - and which will gradually be imposed on us - will utterly change that. It means the end of the presumption of innocence, of true jury trial, of police independence of the State.

Ultimately, it means the end of freedom - except of course for the 'human rights' of hijackers and criminals, who have never been so free.
