Spin, not face-to-face confrontations with the voters, is the Government's chosen method of communication. Ordinary people are dangerous. Britain has traditionally been one of the biggest net contributors to the EU because we do not get as much money back from Brussels in farm and regional subsidies as our rivals. According to Treasury figures, between 1995-2002, Britain's average contribution taking the rebate into account, was £2.6billion, or £43.55 per head of population. The French - the biggest recipient of farm subsidies - contributed £1billion a year or £16.08 per head of their population.

New legislation to combat crime and anti-social behaviour knocks more nails in the coffin of personal freedom and democracy.

Parents have been deprived of the right to discipline their children but now face fines and even imprisonment if those children misbehave. To call this a 'nanny state' is to give it too soft an image. Blair and his Government, having destroyed most of the things which made Britain great (including free speech) are on the way to creating a dictatorship.

To many people, the simple answer to escalating violence and public disorder is to abandon the ludicrous Human Rights Act - which, whatever its original intention, now mainly serves the interests of criminals and miscreants - and to reintroduce corporal punishment.

There used to be a saying 'Spare the rod and spoil the child'. Years of sparing the rod certainly seem to have spoilt the lives of many children, both victims and offenders. Removing from teachers, and parents, the right to cane or smack has led to a breakdown in discipline. This has denied the majority of normally-behaved children the right to a decent education - and denies the offending children the right to learn that bad behaviour is unacceptable and will have unpleasant effects.

Once they reach adulthood, they will be fined or imprisoned (or in some countries, put to death) for the sort of behaviour which could have been nipped in the bud had they received effective discipline when young.

If the bleeding hearts in our Government don't care about the decent majority, they should show a little compassion for the unruly trouble-makers and give them the opportunity to mend their ways before it is too late.
