Britain has traditionally been one of the biggest net contributors to the EU because we do not get as much money back from Brussels in farm and regional subsidies as our rivals. According to Treasury figures, between 1995-2002, Britain's average contribution taking the rebate into account, was £2.6billion, or £43.55 per head of population. The French - the biggest recipient of farm subsidies - contributed £1billion a year or £16.08 per head of their population.

One day after the terrorist (Al Queda?) attack on London

Two days after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and the G8 countries began their meeting to discuss world affairs in Gleneagles

Now we know what it must be like to live in Baghdad. Now we see some of the consequences of our decision to let ourselves be hauled along in the wake of the Americans in a bogus cause, steeped in lies and deceit from start to finish and which has had consequences for Iraq - and now for us - which were both predictable and predicted.

We should fear that Tony Blair, flourishing phrases about 'defeating terrorism', will once more follow the George Bush line: we must not give in, we must see things through. Having dug ourselves into a hole, we must dig deeper. Our determination and our pride as a people is being challenged. We must never give in. It would be shameful.

But what Bush and Blair so stubbornly refuse to recognise is that others, despise them as we may, also have pride. To be invaded and subjugated by a foreign power, particularly when of a different religion, is the ultimate challenge to any community's pride. They also declare they must never give in. It would be shameful.

When two prides as well as two sides are in such fearful collision, it is hard to see an end to the conflict. Blair and others may insist that they are determined to 'defeat terrorism'. But what does that mean? More troops to Iraq where failure is assured.

Already it is estimated that there have been more than 100,000 civilian casualties since the start of 2003. The overtones of Vietnam are unmistakable. Always, the US forces there had to press on to defeat 'communism'. Always, US administrations proclaimed that defeat of the mightiest nation on earth by a very small one would be unthinkable.

Someone will have to give way eventually. Let us be realistic: it is unlikely to be the side that can produce an apparently endless supply of suicide bombers.
